Shrewsbury Child Development Committee

About the SCDC

In 1971 the Shrewsbury Child Development Committee was founded by Mrs. Nora Hakim who was at the time a member of the Shrewsbury School Committee… Mrs. Hakim asked representatives from local clubs, interested residents, and a number of Pupil Personnel staff to constitute a committee to work with parents of pre-schoolers on child development.

This group christened itself ‘Launching Healthy Children Committee’ and later it became ‘The Shrewsbury Child Development Committee.’ Its goal was and still is to assist parents of pre-schoolers, especially new parents, in providing a stimulating, healthy environment in which children can begin to develop their full potential.

For more than 35 years, the SCDC has been a group of committed adults, working together to create programs, activities and publications for the parents and caregivers of young children in our community. For new parents or a family who has recently moved to the area, it can be a lifeline – a key to this strange new world of child development, playgroups, and what to do on a snowy Tuesday morning. For established families, the SCDC provides a safe, comfortable environment where parents and children can learn and build relationships that will last long after preschool.

SCDC activities are open to families in Shrewsbury and the surrounding communities. All parents and caregivers are welcome to the planning meetings.

The SCDC is constantly evolving. As new babies are born and children grow up, the faces at our events change. The events themselves change to suit the needs of today’s families.

The key to the SCDC’s success is participation. The parents who bring their families to the events, share their ideas, and volunteer their time - they are the ones who make the SCDC work.

Join us! Come to an event, come to a planning meeting. Let’s work together to make the SCDC a group that we’re all proud of today and years from now.
